bye, bye tv

So the other day Dan comes home from a run and told me that if I was okay with it, he thought we should disconnect our cable...

...he went on to say how he realized how much time he spent watching TV, and most of all, how much time Jaxon watches US watch tv...how how he's going to follow our example. Plus, there are MUCH better things to be doing.

My initial thought was that I would think about it and see whether I thought I could live without TV or not. Then I realized that was a dumb idea - I knew it was the right choice to make - whether I would like it or not.

So...today was our first day with no cable! When we saw the cable guy in the driveway today we both kinda thought to ourselves "crap...what'd we do?" but really we know this is the right thing to do.

I think the 1st month will be hard because we'll have to change our habits. But after that I think we'll wish we'd done it sooner.

So, ladies...any suggestions on any good books I could read? Right now I'm reading Shepherding a Child's Heart and my next one will be Everyday Talk, but I'm thinking I could probably use some good fiction now that I won't be killing as much time watching tv. Too much non-fiction will make my brain hurt.

  1. Congrats on taking the plunge! It does take an adjustment to having no TV but it does get better. And you picked a great time to do it - you can make your adjustment while it is light in the evenings and there are plenty of outside things to do. We still have no TV and we find that we don't miss it. We have no trouble filling an evening sitting around and chatting just the two of us!

  2. Yep, that is an adjustment for sure. We have been doing it for quite a while now. Actually as long as I can remember to be honest. It's nice to be able to filter what comes into your house. We buy DVD'S of cartoons or VHS from the thrift store for Colby. He seems to like the repetion so it's not so bad. My mom always tells me it's more about the quality than the quantity. (within reason of course)
Anyways congratulations on the choice, you won't regret it.

  3. We also have been without TV for awhile and I don't miss it. I love to read and one of my favorite non fiction authors is Lynn Austin. The Refiner's fire series is excellent and has alot of history on the civil war. If you have never read a book by her I don't think that you would be disappointed.

  4. Anything by Francine Rivers, if you haven't read her yet, the Thorn in My Heart series by Liz Curtis Higgs is EXCELLENT (made we weep, and I do mean weep), Safely Home by Randy Alcorn if you're not about historical fiction. I could go on, but those should start you off. :)

We have recently decided to do this as well. So by the end of this month we won't have cable!! EEEKKK!!! Adam is fine with it, he's not that much into tv but me on the other hand LOVES the tv!! So does Charlie, I mean he doesn't sit in front of it all day but he has some shows he really enjoys watching, so it's going to be a big adjustment for us! If you come across any good books let me know! I always enjoy a Karen Kingsbury book!!!

well good luck with that, you may be better off without it but sometimes a little mindless entertainment is just what you need, on the other hand how long did humans get along without TV, love aunt sherry
